All ABOUT BLiZZARDS!!!

So....what is a BLIZZARD?

A blizzard is a severe snowstorm that often consists of blowing snow and high winds. Temperatures can get well below zero, which makes it incredibly dangerous to be caught outside in one of these storms.

Blizzards winds and snow together make for very low visibility, which is why it is difficult (and dangerous) to attempt driving in one of these storms. Also, combined with the low temperatures, walking outside alone (or with someone, for that matter) can be very dangerous.

So...how can I stay safe in a Blizzard?

Well, first...BUNDLE UP! Blankets, hoodies, sweats, whatever you can find, throw it on! A properly clothed person is 13x more likely to survive in a blizzard than a regularly-clothed person.

Second- don't go out unless absolutely necessary (food, water, medical attention, etc.) Also, NEVER EVER go out in a blizard alone. Always take along a buddy (the buddy system is very important in a blizzard) so that in case one of you is caught in a wind, trip, fall into ice, etc. the other one can get proper help.

Third- If your local weatherstation sends out a WINTER STORM WARNING(or INCLEMENT WEATHER ALERT or something relating to that), do not be caught outside! Stay in your house!

Fourth- Be prepared! Have an emergency blizzard kit ready at all times. Some good ideas to have are

-Flashlights. Blizzards have been known to knock out the power.

-Blankets and extra warm clothes. Temperatures can drop well below zero.

-First Aid Kit(and a knowledge of what's inside!) If someone is injured during this storm (without power, you can trip very easily!) help will be right at hand.

-Bottled Water. If your power is knocked out, things in your refrigerator will spoil very easily(milk, juice, etc.) Also, don't rely on tap water because in a blizzard pipes have been known to freeze.

-CANNED food. This is very important. As forementioned, food and drinks will spoil easily. Canned goods, on the other hand, can stay fresh for months (and years) on end. So be sure to have a good selection at hand. Some good ones are canned soups (no cooking needed! Just eat & enjoy!) canned veggies, canned fruits and even some canned meats.

***This emergency kit is very generic, so it will help in any storm you happen to be caught in, which makes it all the more important to have!***

Blizzards are very common in European countries. Because they're temperature is most generally colder than our's, it snows much more. But blizzards can happen here too. Many small, non life-threatenign blizzards happen in Alaska often.
